Montebello dates back to September 9, 1771 when San Gabriel Mission was founded by Father Angel Somera and Father Pedro Cambon. The city originally had three parts Rancho San Antonia, Rancho La Merced, and Rancho Paso de Bartolo. The original town site was 40 acres bounded by First Street, Fifth Street, Cleveland and Los Angeles Avenue. Today, the city encompasses 8.4 square miles. The first name of the city was Newmark, its current name Montebello is Italian for beautiful hills. The city was incorporated in 1920 and is the 35th city in Los Angeles County. Montebello is a “Gateway City.” The city’s mission statement is “Creating Community through People, Parks and Recreation.”
